Fishing Technique
Upon your arrival at the Rivers Inlet Sportsmans Club fishing lodge, you will receive intensive instruction on our technique for catching trophy salmon and halibut. You will also receive instruction on boat handling, safety and conservation.
In Rivers Inlet we use a ‘cut plug’ herring for bait. The herring’s head is cut off on an angle; its body is then hooked onto a line in such a way that the herring rolls (or spins) while being dragged through the water. The rolling herring imitates a wounded bait fish. Our BC salmon fishing technique is called ‘motor mooching’. The angler lowers the line to shallow depths (5 to 25 feet). Then, by moving the motor in and out of gear the angler varies the depth and action of the slowly rolling herring. ‘Motor mooching’ is the most productive method of salmon fishing for chinook salmon (kings). These big salmon like to rest away from the current close to shore among the rocks and kelp. The cut plug herring imitates a “wounded bait fish” that is easy prey for these big lazy salmon.
While salmon fishing for coho (silvers) we use a trolling technique. This is a much faster style of fishing. Coho like a more vigorous bait fish and tend to school further off shore (10 to 300 yards) the angler keeps their engine in gear so the bait imitates a more lively bait fish.
