Hatchery Report - November 2020


The Rivers Inlet fishing lodges & other salmon stakeholders have had a long history of salmon enhancement.
It was 35 years ago that we decided we needed to take things into our own hands & enhance the salmon runs in the 2 main rivers in our watershed, the Chuckwalla & Kilbella. We formed an association of regional fishing lodges with the sole purpose of starting the world’s first privately run salmon hatchery program. The Rivers Inlet North Coast Salmon Enhancement Association (RINCSEA) was formed & survives to this day.

RINCSEA fishing lodges have worked for many years in conjunction with the Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO), First Nations & other stakeholders to enhance the Chinook/King stocks with great success. To say that this is a complicated process in our remote wilderness setting is an understatement. After more than 30 years enhancing these Chinook/King salmon runs, & even an attempt at enhancing the coho/silver salmon, the RINCSEA group drew back its efforts. Fast-forward to recent times - A new regime was formed & we now have the Pearcy Walkus Hatchery where our Rivers Inlet returns of salmon are being enhanced. This hatchery was built with private & corporate donations, including some donated by RINCSEA & our Rivers Inlet Sportsman's Club guests via the Pacific Salmon Foundation. This year the hatchery is on track to release Chinook/King salmon 300,000 + smolts.
During the past few weeks, the first stage in the annual hatchery process took place - This is the actual collection of the eggs & milk by fishing for the brood stock of salmon in the rivers. These target Chinook/King salmon return to the rivers at the head of the Rivers Inlet in the fall. The Percy Walkus Hatchery crew went up to catch these brood stock salmon.

In the late eighties we used to do it with rod & reel from early August onwards. In recent years a gill net has been used with much greater success! Reports are that the 2020 egg take was “epic” with incredible results. The team made the goal of 300,000+ eggs on each of the Chuckwalla & Kilbella rivers. Also, DNA & scale samples were taken from 280 salmon. This is valuable data from which we can determine run sizes, stock sizes, age, & ocean survival of released salmon etc.  At our recent RINCSEA meeting, our board approved another annual donation to the Rivers Inlet hatchery program. We are excited to be a part of this amazing project & we are grateful to all involved in donating their efforts in this investment in Rivers Inlet salmon for the next generations. Recipe - Crispy Salmon Tacos with Mango & Avocado

Ingredients - Yields 4 servings

— 5 1/2 ounce ripe mixed-colour cherry tomatoes

— 1 small ripe mango

— 1/2 small ripe avocado

— 2 scallions

— 2 x 4 1/2 ounce salmon fillets, skin-on, scaled, pin-boned

— 2 heaping teaspoons of Cajun seasoning

— 4 small tortillas

— 2 limes


Directions

Quarter the cherry tomatoes. Pit, peel and roughly chop the mango. Scoop out the avocado and finely slice. Trim and finely slice the scallions. Carefully cut the skin off the salmon and place it in a non-stick frying pan on a medium-high heat to crisp up both sides. Pat the Cajun seasoning all over the salmon fillets, then fry for 5 minutes, turning to get them golden on each of their sides. Once the skin is crispy, move it to sit on top of the salmon.


Meanwhile, use tongs to toast the tortillas directly over the flames of your gas stove for 15 seconds or use a hot pan. Sprinkle the mango, avocado and scallions over the tortillas, then flake in the salmon and crack up and add the crispy skin. Toss the tomatoes and the juice of 1 lime in the residual heat of the pan for 30 seconds, then spoon over the tortillas. Serve with lime wedges, for squeezing over.
